Or grabbed a drink at a bar and realized that Fox News was being broadcast to its customers?\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nYou might grouse that you’re being forced to watch something that doesn’t jive with your political views. Or maybe you think it’s no big deal – your views are already fully formed, so you can just tune it out.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nHowever, more than \u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/joc\/article-abstract\/53\/2\/199\/4102885\"\u003Ethree decades of academic research\u003C\/a\u003E and eight years \u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.jou.ufl.edu\/staff\/frank-waddell\/\"\u003Eof my own work on media\u003C\/a\u003E suggest that the presence of cable news on television in shared public spaces does influence us – just not in the way you might think.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cdiv\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Ch3\u003E\n\u003Cspan style=\"color: red; font-family: \u0026quot;verdana\u0026quot; , sans-serif;\"\u003E\u003Cu\u003E‘It’s affecting you, not me’\u003C\/u\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/h3\u003E\n\u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/poq\/article-abstract\/72\/2\/331\/1921043\"\u003EStudies from communication science\u003C\/a\u003E tell us that the effects unfold in two steps.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nFirst, audiences will often \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/2002-00742-018\"\u003Eoverestimate the influence\u003C\/a\u003E of media on the other people in the room, while underestimating how broadcasts influence their own views and beliefs.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nThis is called the “\u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/poq\/article-abstract\/47\/1\/1\/1906961\"\u003Ethird-person effect\u003C\/a\u003E,” and it’s most likely to happen when \u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1207\/S15327825MCS0301_04\"\u003Epeople don’t want the media to influence other people\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nFor example, say a conservative woman who is a regular viewer of Fox News dines at a restaurant that has MSNBC playing. She’s more likely to think that the broadcast wields power over the other customers, without taking into account the effect that her own regular consumption of Fox News has on her own views.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nThe second part of the process involves what communications scholars call “\u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/0093650205279350\"\u003Ethe influence of presumed influence model\u003C\/a\u003E.”\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nInitially tested on \u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/joc\/article-abstract\/56\/1\/52\/4102566\"\u003Ehow anti-smoking ads influence groups of young people\u003C\/a\u003E – and since applied to \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/0093650205279350\"\u003Ea range of topics\u003C\/a\u003E including \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/0093650205281057\"\u003Epolitics\u003C\/a\u003E – its central tenet is that if you presume someone is being influenced by media, you’ll change your own behaviors.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nSuch changes might involve trying to mitigate the influence of media on others. For example, one study found that if you think pornography has a bad influence on others, \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/0093650210362684\"\u003Eyou might be more likely to support media censorship of pornographic content\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/0093650209333026\"\u003EAnother study\u003C\/a\u003E looked at political ads. It found that if you believe others are seeing – and being affected by – political ads on behalf of a candidate you don’t support, you might be more likely to vote in that election in order to prevent that politician from winning.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nNot all behaviors are active, however. When you think your views are in the minority, \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/0093650204269388\"\u003Eyou’re more likely to be passive\u003C\/a\u003E in your response to media. So if a liberal goes to a barbershop in a conservative city like Colorado Springs and hears Rush Limbaugh on the radio, they’ll be less likely to ask the barber to switch the station or start a conversation about politics.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nThis isn’t exactly a good thing. Scholars believe that when you believe you hold attitudes that are out of step with the majority, it can lead to a “\u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/joc\/article-abstract\/24\/2\/43\/4553587\"\u003Espiral of silence\u003C\/a\u003E,” in which you’re less likely to express personal opinions for fear of rejection.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cdiv\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Ch3\u003E\n\u003Cspan style=\"color: red; font-family: \u0026quot;verdana\u0026quot; , sans-serif;\"\u003E\u003Cu\u003EChoosing the channels\u003C\/u\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/h3\u003E\nIf televisions in public spaces can influence perceived opinions or political behavior, who’s selecting the stations in the first place?\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nThe stations being broadcast in restaurants or hotel lobbies might simply be the decision of a business owner or building manager.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nMost likely, they’re assuming that their political preferences are consistent with those of the public – a tendency known as \u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/poq\/article-abstract\/40\/4\/427\/1872200?redirectedFrom=fulltext\"\u003Ethe false consensus effect\u003C\/a\u003E – and are choosing channels accordingly.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Ctable align=\"center\" cellpadding=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" class=\"tr-caption-container\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;\"\u003E\u003Ctbody\u003E\n\u003Ctr\u003E\u003Ctd style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003E\u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-M4Za_MLOn8o\/W5jt_945f4I\/AAAAAAAASNA\/9FRIB5iAAjYYIc9dzZmIK2tbAgjbdpAgQCLcBGAs\/s1600\/file-20180910-123113-1dm8r56.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\"\u003E\u003Cimg border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"507\" data-original-width=\"754\" height=\"auto\" src=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-M4Za_MLOn8o\/W5jt_945f4I\/AAAAAAAASNA\/9FRIB5iAAjYYIc9dzZmIK2tbAgjbdpAgQCLcBGAs\/s640\/file-20180910-123113-1dm8r56.jpg\" width=\"90%\" \/\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/td\u003E\u003C\/tr\u003E\n\u003Ctr\u003E\u003Ctd class=\"tr-caption\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Ci\u003EAirmen watch a televised Medal of Honor presentation on Fox News at\u003C\/i\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Ci\u003EKeesler Air Force in Mississippi in August. \u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.keesler.af.mil\/News\/Art\/igphoto\/2001958282\/\"\u003EKemberly Groue\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/i\u003E\u003C\/td\u003E\u003C\/tr\u003E\n\u003C\/tbody\u003E\u003C\/table\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nBy comparison, the cable news channels airing in airport terminals are often predetermined: Airports \u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2012\/09\/04\/cnn-airport-clear-channel_n_1853625.html\"\u003Esign contracts\u003C\/a\u003E with the parent companies of the news channels, which pay them to broadcast their content.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nTime Warner’s \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/CNN\/Programs\/airport.network\/cnn-apn-media-kit-2018-updated.pdf\"\u003ECNN airport package\u003C\/a\u003E is the most widespread: 59 airports across the nation air CNN to an audience of 323 million annual travelers.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nFox News \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/entertainment\/2018\/03\/23\/how-cnn-airport-force-feeds-partisan-content-to-unsuspecting-travelers.html\"\u003Ehas criticized\u003C\/a\u003E what it calls CNN’s “airport monopoly.” Thousands of \u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/fcc-remove-cnn-s-airport-monopoly-and-tax-payer-funded-broadcast\"\u003Ehave signed petitions\u003C\/a\u003E demanding the removal of CNN from airport televisions – a response to the perceived ideological slant of the channel.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nThese petitions are a clear example of the “influence of presumed influence model” in action. Because they fear CNN is exerting undue political influence on their fellow travelers, these petitioners – presumably conservative – seek to censor it.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nIn other words, the prospect of these broadcasts changing their own political views isn’t really what they’re upset about.
