Good News Round-up for July 2019

by Nomad

Thought you might like a break from the Trump News.
The theme of this collection of good news stories is not scientific developments or large scale efforts to right some man-made wrong.

Rather, these are stories on a smaller (but no less significant) calibration: personal acts of charity and courage that have made or are making a difference in the lives of strangers.

Re-directing the Kindness

Inspired by their young son's birthday wish, one family in Boise, Idaho has been helping local families in need by setting up a small free food pantry.
According to local reporting, Miles Herndon recently celebrated his third birthday, but he didn't have a traditional birthday party. Instead of gifts, his guests were asked to bring canned food for the food pantry.
Miles' mom, Macy Miller, says
"Birthdays are a time of giving, and we don't need that much stuff. We don't need the amount of gifts that we get, so we were trying to find ways to direct the kindness to where it was more needed."

Young Businessman with a Heart

The fact that 13-year-old Michael Platt owns his own bakery is remarkable enough. That's only half of the story. The Washington, DC business operates on a very special model. The bakery utilizes a one-for-one donation model, meaning that for every cupcake sold he donates one to the homeless. Platt wanted to do more than run a successful enterprise.
"I knew that I wanted to make a business, but I knew I didn't just want to make money, I also wanted to help people at the same time."

One Teacher's Shared Vision

Münevver Çelebi, a high school teacher in Turkey's southeastern city of Adana, believes every child should have an equal opportunity for success.

Not long ago, when Ms. Çelebi realized there are little or no audiobooks helping visually-impaired high schoolers to prepare for the Turkish university entrance exam, she was determined to find a solution.

She and other volunteers have been creating audio recordings of typical exam questions on subjects such as Turkish language, history, philosophy, geography, religion, and basic mathematics questions. Her future goal is to obtain the approval of the Education Ministry to expand the project across Turkey.

Until copyright issues are resolved, her audio files are being shared privately amongst other visually-impaired students preparing to take the all-important exams. Said Çelebi:
"I do not know any of them, but about 20 students have utilized from them. They are sending me their photographs to say ‘thank you."

High Drama

A moment of high drama in the Fatih district of Istanbul was caught by CCTV last week. When two-year-old Doha Muhammed dropped from an open window of her second-floor apartment, 17-year-old Feuzi Zabaat was there to make a spectacular save. According to local media, the toddler approached the open window of the apartment while her mother was cooking in the kitchen and slipped over the ledge.
Doha survived the accident without any injuries.

The Algerian immigrant told later reporters that he did what he had to do to save the girl:
"I did what was necessary for the love of God."
