Weekly Review
The main story this week was, of course, the same one as last week- the appalling and gruesome murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Ahmad Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
A timeline of statements from the Saudi authorities show repeated changes to their narrative- meaning, lies- ever since Mr. Khashoggi walked into the consulate and mysteriously disappeared.

The only person who seemed satisfied by the attempt at damage control was President Trump, a man who was willing to subscribe to whatever conspiracy that Alex Jones peddled. The US president called the claim that Khashoggi died as a result of a "brawl" was credible and called the arrests of supposedly rogue assassins a "good first step."

The New York Times reported that Saudi Arabia has launched its own troll army online in response to criticism about the Kashoggi murder. The effort was ordered by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and his close advisers to silence dissent.

The Trump Administration announced on Saturday its intention to withdraw from the landmark Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty with Russia. As CNN reported:

The treaty forced both countries to eliminate ground-launched ballistic and cruise missiles with ranges between approximately 300 and 3,400 miles. It offered a blanket of protection to the United States' European allies and marked a watershed agreement between two nations at the center of the arms race during the Cold War.

Russian officials expressed their anger at the decision, calling it a return to the Cold War days and a "massive blow to the entire system of strategic stability in the world."

In other news, the grand prize for the latest Mega Millions drawing has now soared to a staggering $1.6 billion. The drawing is scheduled for Tuesday. With the jackpot currently tied with the record-setting lottery jackpot and bound to grow before the next drawing, it is bound to become the largest prize in U.S. history. Mega Millions is played in 44 states as well as Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Musical Sanity Break

This week's Sanity Sunday selection started out as an homage to Southern Rock of the 70s but I kept finding songs that didn't quite fit that category. Now it's a bit of a mixed bag with a touch of the South.
